What is an HSN code?

HSN — the Harmonized System of Nomenclature — is the worldwide system customs authorities use to classify goods. Every product falls into one of 21 sections and 98 chapters, then into headings and sub-headings. India adopted it for GST so that every taxable item has a precise, shared description, and the classification you choose decides which GST rate applies.

What is a SAC code?

Services are classified separately, under the Services Accounting Code. All SAC codes begin with 99: a 4-digit group such as 9954 (construction) or 9983 (professional and business services), then a 6-digit code for the specific service.

Reading a code: 2, 4, 6 and 8 digits

DigitsLevelExample
2Chapter85 — electrical machinery and equipment
4Heading8517 — telephone sets, including smartphones
6Sub-heading (international)851713 — smartphones
8Tariff item (India)85171300 — the Indian tariff line

How many digits must my invoice show?

  • Turnover up to ₹5 crore (previous financial year): at least 4 digits on B2B tax invoices.
  • Turnover above ₹5 crore: at least 6 digits on all tax invoices.
  • Exports and imports: the full 8 digits.

The same codes are reported in the HSN-wise summary of GSTR-1, in GSTR-9, and on e-invoices and e-way bills.

How to use this finder

  1. Type what you sell in plain words — “steel pipe”, “cotton shirt”, “courier service” — or any part of a code.
  2. Narrow the list with the goods/services and chapter filters if needed.
  3. Open a result to see its chapter, heading and sub-heading, and copy the code.
  4. Confirm the GST rate for that code on the official CBIC rate list before invoicing.

HSN & SAC FAQ

What does HSN stand for?+

Harmonized System of Nomenclature — an international system for classifying goods, maintained by the World Customs Organization. India uses it for customs and for GST, extending the six international digits to eight for Indian tariff items.

What is a SAC code?+

A Services Accounting Code. It plays the same role for services that HSN plays for goods. SAC codes in India start with 99 — for example 9983 covers professional, technical and business services.

How many digits of HSN do I need to show on my invoices?+

It depends on your turnover in the previous financial year. Businesses with aggregate turnover up to ₹5 crore must show at least 4 digits on B2B tax invoices; above ₹5 crore, 6 digits on all invoices. Using the full 8 digits is always allowed and is required for exports and imports.

Can I search by part of a code?+

Yes. Type 2, 4 or 6 digits and the finder lists that chapter, heading or sub-heading together with every more detailed code beneath it.

Does this finder show the GST rate?+

Not yet. Rates depend on notifications and conditions — for example whether goods are branded, packaged or sold below a price — and changed significantly in September 2025. Each code page links to the official CBIC rate list so you can confirm the current rate before you invoice.

Several codes match my product. Which one should I use?+

Choose the most specific description that fits what you actually sell — material, use and form all matter. Read the chapter and heading notes on the code page, and if it is still unclear, ask your tax advisor, because the code you choose decides the GST rate.

Where do HSN and SAC codes appear in GST compliance?+

On tax invoices, in the HSN-wise summary in GSTR-1, in the annual return GSTR-9, and in e-invoices and e-way bills. Accounting software such as IntelligentGST stores the code once on each item so it flows into all of these automatically.

Where does this data come from?+

From the HSN and SAC master published by the GST portal (tutorial.gst.gov.in). This copy was last refreshed on 2026-10-16.
